Gray is an international photographer, born in Cambridge, UK. At the age of 14 he started working weekends in his father’s record store Andy’s Records, it is here he developed a love of icons through album and video artwork. His mother was a vintage fashion dealer, whose profession he also attributes as having had a major influence on his career.
It was at university that Gray discovered photography, under the guidance of photographic book publisher Stuart Smith, here he developed a strong sense of narrative through documentary photography and sights the work of Don McCullin and Martin Parr as major influences.
Gray went on to develop a distinct photographic style of portraiture influenced by the history of film. In 2008 he was approached by BAFTA to document their awards; this validation won him commissions from international movie studios to create editorial stories on film sets and shoot film and theatre posters. Gray has worked extensively with directors Jamie Lloyd, Sam Gold, Ralph Fiennes amongst others.
Gray’s ability to tell a story and capture the mood has earnt him portrait commissions from major titles such as Vanity Fair, Vogue & Esquire. His life-long interest in the art of clothing and film making is represented in his work with the world’s leading actors, fashion brands and personal projects.
September 2023 Gray opened a solo exhibition titled ‘Performance’ at Leica Gallery, London. The show of works celebrates the intimate relationship between photographer and sitter, the portraits on show include Robert De Niro, Ronnie Wood and Monica Bellucci. Gray is a Leica ambassador.
